yes! our country would be a better place if everyone had to serve! right now it is unfair to our soldiers in uniform that no one really understands what they go thru and people even forget that there is a war on and soldiers are dying in iraq and afghanistan.

I agree with some of what Mia says, but I believe in a draft for a different reason. During the Vietnam War, those who opposed the war spoke out against it, because it touched their lives no matter where they came from. Right now, so many of us are protected from the reality of war. While we might be opposed to it intellectually, we haven't directly suffered its losses and destruction. If there were a draft, perhaps that would lead us to speak our voice--if we aren't courageous enough to speak out for somebody else's son or daughter, perhaps we will speak out for our own.

personally if there was a draft I would dodge, If there was a war I felt worth fighting for I'd go of course, I just don't want the government forcing me to go fight for their cause...

I really think what teachnyc is saying makes sense. It is better for our soldiers, and our country, if we are not all just protected from the reality of war. OUR taxes are going to fight wars, yet as citizens we can just disengage and not focus on them because no one is making us. Think about all those Hollywood films on the Iraq war that came out and totally bombed - it isn't that they were bad films, its just that no one wanted to spend $12 and two hours thinking about that subject when they could just be in some mindless film getting entertained. We are allowing the wars to happen, but we aren't really effected by them directly and a draft would mean we would be, and so would view the consequences of those wars more seriously. - Melissa, Tampa Fl.

i see what melissa is saying but i really think some of those hollywood films were BAD - totally just preaching to a bunch of leftists on the east/west coast and not respecting the complexity of what those wars mean for the rest of us. plus the acting was bad and they were just boring (okay, i didn't watch them all, but the trailers made them look really horrible). i think the recruiter is the only film i've seen that really captures what the military means for the rest of us. the camaraderie. the opportunity. the pride you get.

I think we may need one with our sending in more troops to the current wars (and the Iraq War is still going on even though all the newspapers are now just concentrating on Afghanistan)!

The wars of the past are nothing like the wars of today, however, one thing remains the same. We don't need a draft.

Although I can respect a lot of what was previously said, I could not be more opposed to the draft. Ideally you enter the services because you feel a sense of pride in the army, you believe in the war and you are willing to give everything you know to be there.

For the other 70% of us - well, we would dodge. I truly believe in owning the responsibility of this immense decision. We are talking about risking lives.. it shouldnt be forced on you. Not to mention, recruiting numbers are the highest they have been since 1973!

This country gives us everything. If we need more troops to win the war, isn't the draft a legitimate option?

Happy Veterans Day everyone! Should there be a draft? I don't know. But I do know we owe a lot to the men and women who currently volunteered to serve.
